Spot Satellite GPS Messenger - £99.00
Global Telesat Communications has launched a cunning new device that can send messages to selected recipients, updating them of your on-water progress, or to alert search and rescue organisations if something goes wrong from almost anywhere on the globe. The new SPOT Satellite GPS Messenger uses low-orbit satellites to relay a simple, pre-programmed message to specifi ed recipients in near real time. The inbuilt GPS attaches a position to the message, so family and friends can keep a track of the user on Google maps via the internet.
If there is a serious problem, a dedicated SOS button can be pressed and held for two seconds, which will automatically alert the nearest rescue services, and send them an accurate fi x. For non life-threatening emergencies, a ‘help’ button is provided, which will alert a network of pre-selected contacts that the user has been inconvenienced, and needs assistance. Other functions include the Check In/OK function, which updates the position and lets the user’s contacts know that all is well. These waypoints can be stored for later use, such as building a record of a voyage. The Custom Message function allows the user to expand the simple ‘OK’ with a pre-written message, placed on the system prior to departure. The new SPOT Messenger is a smaller and lighter version of the hugely popular SPOT Tracker, which was launched just over a year ago. Both units make full use of satellite technology, yet without the costs associated with more sophisticated satellite phones. Instead, a simple annual call-time plan is purchased on line, which gives unlimited messages. The annual fee costs £99 (£85 aprox at time of going to press), with complete access to all of the SPOT Messenger’s main functions. Users can log on to their account at any time to modify the list of contacts, retrieve their waypoints, or rewrite their custom messages.

JUICED Glucojuice - £1.59
Glucojuice is an energy drink in ‘shot’ form. What makes it special is that it is caffeine, gluten and sodium free. It also has no artifi cial colourings and preservatives. The drink is aimed at those with an active lifestyle - what the blurb calls “red-eyed candle burners, die-hard athletes, work stressed students” and so on.
THEIR OPINION:
Brand Manager Gaby O’Leary said “it is essential for athletes that energy products are light weight, easy to open, consume and release carbohydrate fast. Glucojuice ticks all the boxes…and actually tastes pleasantly fruity too!”
OUR OPINION:
This actually tasted quite nice. Only available in one fl avour so far, the ‘Berry Burst’ was a crowd pleaser, and when I used it for sports, there was a genuine boost. A shame there are not more fl avours, but we would recommend this after (or before) fi erce exercise out on the water.

Limited edition Animal - £300
A limited edition watch by Animal is on now the market – but you’re going to have to be quick. The model is called the ‘Pipeline’ and is marketed as ‘the most unique tide watch in existence’. With tidal information able to be presented in both analogue and digital format, the watch can let you view data on push and pull, neaps and springs, and lets you access the vitals of any surf break worldwide, wherever the information is available.
Animal have only made 500 of these little beauties and they say no more will ever be produced. Composed of marine grade stainless steel, each watch is engraved with a special serial number so you can be assured of its authenticity. Each timepiece has a surf board fi ncompatible bolt-secured strapping system but comes packaged with the more traditional webbing in a special presentation case. The myriad of further features on this watch would take more space here than we can afford, but safe to say this will be £300 well spent. Already half of the 500 have sold (at time of checking), if they haven’t sold out by time of publication they will soon.
